Keegan had a creepy reaction to a banana nut muffin in September- his mouth was itchy, he had hives spreading over his face, he scared us- a lot (ok well he scared mom more than dad).
So we found a new pediatrician, Dr Schwake (who we may love by the way) and he ordered some blood tests for the boys. Grayson's came back all clear. Keegan's however came back pretty concerning for nuts and seeds.
So we made an appointment with Dr. Lustig, an allergist at Children's Hospital, and spent over 2 hours doing more specific allergy testing.
Sadly, sweet Keegan has a lot of very scary allergies that could potentially be very severe, even fatal, if we aren't super careful.
He reacted to all nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, ......), peanuts and sesame seeds. Seriously, sesame seeds, peanuts and tree nuts. seriously.
At first we thought, ok- no nuts, we can do that, no big deal.
But the more I read, the more I research, the more labels I encounter ---- the more overwhelmed I become. This is huge. just.huge.
Nuts (especially since we have to avoid both tree nuts and peanuts) and seeds are in just about everything-- M & Ms (even the chocolate), Roundy's pie crust, our favorite red licorice from Trader Joe's, Keegan's favorite organic cheese crackers, my shampoo. The list seems overwhelming sometimes-- well most times right now.
I feel like the more I learn, the more worried I become about preventing Keegan from having a reaction, the more I realize that these allergens are pretty much everywhere, the less safe I feel for my boy.
My sweet, precious, baby boy- I just can't believe he is going to be dealing with these his whole life, my heart is aching for him and for me and my family.
I feel like I spent so much time while pregnant, and nursing, and parenting praying and hoping for my kids to be happy and healthy, to have a fair chance at a good life, to have good health and good intelligence and a good chance at a good life. Being a grown up is hard, life is hard- I just so much wanted my kids to have it as easy as possible and I am intensely sad that is not the case for my sweetest.
I know we will get used to it, I know we will find a new normal, I just wish we didn't have to.
But, I am glad we found out as early as we did so that we can hopefully learn a lot fast and be pros at keeping him safe by the time he goes to school or is ever out of our care. For now, we have a kitchen to clean out, a lot of articles to read, and a lot to try to learn to keep our sweet Keegan safe.
